EARLY BEGINNINGS
The story of Richmond begins near Brunswick, Germany in 1769. The Duke of Brunswick took an English wife, and when she became homesick, he built for her the Scholsschen (little castle) Richmond, now a tourist attraction known as Richmond Palace.
Over 100 years later, the Brunswick-born Heinrich Hilmar Julius Wolters, built a grand house in Carterton, New Zealand, for his English wife Julia – and called it Richmond. Located on Richmond Road, the property was kept in the family for three generations until being sold in 1948.
Over the years, it passed through a few hands, and sections were carved off and sold, with the property sadly falling into a state of disrepair.
RESTORATION
In 1993, a Wellington family bought the property and embarked on a major restoration and expansion of the house, designing and planting the garden as it stands today. It was listed as a Garden of International Significance.
Now under the guardianship of Tim Clarke and Tessa O'Rorke, Richmond Estate continues to evolve, its grand heritage honoured.
